"Um…
Is that them?" Ahmed asked pointing up the street. Two Colonialists were heading
rapidly towards them. On skateboards!
Dennis
laughed. "Yep. The gentleman on the left, the African American, is Benjamin Banneker.
He's a scientist and the editor of a noted Alamanac. The other one is Benjamin
Rush. He was the Physician General during the Revolutionary War and one of the
signers of the Declaration of Independence!" The two Benjamins waved at them.
"Today
they've come to talk about the course this new nation is taking. They're upset
that although a War Department has been set up, there are no plans to form a Department
of Peace."
The two colonists flashed the kids a peace sign as they roared by.
"Um…they
hadn't invented skate-boards by 1792!" Erin pointed out.
Dennis laughed again. "Anything can happen in cyberspace."
"Hey,
Kucinich," Benjamin Banneker called as the two men raced back. "Go long!" Mr.
Banneker tossed something in the air. Dennis leaped up over a passing carriage
and caught it. The PeaceKids were impressed.
"Oh,
thanks," Dennis blushed. "I played football in high school."
Dennis handed Ming the Almanac he had caught. "The very next year after this meeting,
Benjamin Banneker's Almanac included an article written by Benjamin Rush entitled,
'A Plan of a Peace Office for the United States.' This was more than 200 years
before I introduced a bill in Congress to create a Department of Peace!"
Dennis pulled out his palm pilot and started tapping. Suddenly they found themselves
whizzing through Cyberspace.
